If large quantities are involved significant levels of carbon dioxide may be generated requiring self contained breathing apparatus.  Sodium bicarbonate decomposes with heat creating soda ash which is a respiratory, eye and skin irritant.

EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE

 
Large doses have produced systemic alkalosis and expansion in intracellular fluid volume with edema.

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES

Skin: Flush with flowing water or shower.  Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
Eyes: Flush with water for 15 minutes, call physician.
Ingestion: Administer large quantities of water. Do not  inducing vomiting.  Seek medical attention immediately.

CONDITIONS CONTRIBUTING TO INSTABILITY: NONE, NORMALLY STABLE
INCOMPATIBILITY: (Materials to avoid) Can react rapidly with strong acids to form carbon dioxide gas, salt and water.

WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD:
Dry landfill if not contaminated with other hazardous waste. Follow local, state and federal disposal regulations.
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED:
Put into dry clean containers.
Avoid combination or contact with lime dust as caustic soda may form.

Wear safety glasses, goggles, and or face shield during blasting operation.
When blasting inside vessels a forced air blast hood or full face respirator must be worn.
